  • French and Indian War

    Was a series of military engagements between Britain and France in North America between 1754 and 1763. American Revolution phase of Seven Years' War.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Declared by British at the end of the Indian War. Intended to conciliate Native Americans by checking the rights of settlers on their lands.
  • Sugar Act

    A law passed in 1764 by the British Parliament raising duties on foreign refined sugar imported by colonies to give British sugar growers in the West Indies a monopoly on the colonial market.
  • Stamp Act

    Passed by the British Parliament in 1765. A new tax was imposed on all American colonists that required them to pay taxes on every piece of printed paper they used.
  • Quartering Act

    In 1765 the act required colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies. If they were too small to house all the soldiers, localities were to put them in local inns, ale houses, stables, etc.
  • Townshend Act

    Series of laws passed by British government on American colonies in 1767. This placed new taxes in place and took some freedoms away
  • Boston Massacre

    In 1770 a street fight broke out between a "patriot" mob throwing things everywhere. Several colonists were killed and this led to a campaign.
  • Tea Act

    In 1773, a British law was passed by the Parliament of Great Britain. It was designed to bail out British East India Company and expand the company's monopoly on tea trade.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts in 1773. Boston colonists, disguised as Indians, threw hundreds of chests of tea into the harbor as a protest against British taxes on tea and the monopoly granted the East India Company.
  • First Continental Congress

    In 1774, delegates from each of the 13 colonies except for Georgia met in Philadelphia to organize colonial resistance to Parliament's Coercive Acts.
  • Coercive Acts

    In 1774, laws were passed by British Parliament relating to Britain's colonies in North America. This was a response to the Boston Tea Party. They punished Massachusetts as a warning to other colonies.
  • Common Sense

    A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775-1776 advocating independence from Great Britain to people in the 13 colonies. This proposed political arguments to encourage common people to fight for equal government.
  • Shot Heard Around the World

    In 1775, the opening shot of the battle of Concord. This began the American Revolutionary War and led to the creation of the United States of America.
  • Second Continental Congress

    A convention of delegates from the 13 colonies that formed in 1775 soon after the launch of the American Revolutionary War.
  • Declaration of Independence

    In 1776 the most important documents in history. Official Act taken by all 13 American colonies in declaring independence from British rule.
