June 21, 1779, Spain declared war on Great Britain creating an alliance with the Americans. Spain's King Charles lll did not agree to a treaty alliance with the United States. French managed to make an agreement on a treaty with Spain. -
1779 - John Paul Jones & Serapis
In 1779, John Paul Jones sailed around British Isles. On this trip they encountered the Serapis. The Serapis made damage to John Paul Jones ship the Bonhomme Richard. After 3 hours of fighting the Serpis surrendered. John Paul Jones became known as a hero. -
1780 - British forces capture Charles Town
This battle in the American revolutionary war was a major British Victory. It was also one of the worst defeats of the Americans. This fight took place between March 29 - May 12, 1780. The British focused on attacking the Southern colonies during this battle. They ended up battling in Charleston, South Carolina until the city surrendered. -
1781 British surrender at Yorktown
This battle was a major battles for America. Since the British ships never arrived to bring 8,000 more troops to Yorktown it resulted in General Charles Cornwallis surrendering his troops. America this day gained Independence, and beat the British. -
