American Revolution

  • End of French and Indian war

America faced competition over land and control for north America trade routes, French alliance with native groups, after being trade partners. battles took place: King Williams war, fought to decide the control of the north. Queen Anne's war, Yamasee war, and King George's war. Power of Government could propose areas for war bases and levy taxes, protected under the Albany plan. British win but leaves Americans with higher taxes, British troops in the colonies and the proclamation line of 1783
  • Sugar act

Lowers taxes on Molasses Act but increases price on sugar, set with a goal to decrease smuggling with and indirect tax on the product but unfortunately for the British, was boycotted
  • Stamp Act

A separate tax paid directly to all printed goods. this could range from a one cent to ten dollars worth of taxes. the colonist boycott this too and a non-importation agreement with merchants so they do not sell anything printed so that the British still are not getting money. Acts are just provoking Americans, some turned to violent or illegal methods like tarring and feathering, or they keep smuggling, or just don't pay the taxes.
  • Townshend Act

British are not gaining anything from the acts and Americans are boycotting every rule made so they replace taxes on printed goods with taxes on glass, paint, tea, and more. this still upsets the Americans still
  • Quartering Act

require that British troops stationed in America must be housed and fed by Americans. Americans already do not like the British soldiers, so being forced to house them makes the colonist very angry. another reason for the Americans to want to be independent
  • Boston Massacre

American claim to be on a protest against the British troops, cause and affect from the Quartering Act however this protest turns into a riot with the Americans yelling threats and throwing clubs. The British fired without proper commands, killing 5 Americans. the British believe this to be a mistake of commands and that the Americans were being brutal. Americans believe they fired at them for no reason and that the protest included no violence. This sparked the beginning of the revolution.
  • Start of Revolutionary Boston/ Tea act of 1773

Tea Act of 1773 to protect the India Co., so Americans and the British can only buy tea off of the India Co. to make a bigger profit. with the Townshend Act already paying a toll on the tax of tea, this becomes a catalyst of the Boston tea party. The Americans saw this as the last straw and Sam Adams and the sons of liberty were ready to fight for their freedom.
  • Boston Tea party

342 barrels of tea dumped into the harbor as a protest led by Sam Adams against the British. The king only sees America as a minor threat but this is worth $1-3 million worth of tea and hurts him economically. King George is definitely upset and sees this as a threat and decides to use force with the Intolerable Acts reaction
  • Intolerable Acts Reaction

British isolate Boston because the Boston harbor is a heavy source of economy. This is a fair punishment, because of all the money lost from the Boston tea party but Sam Adams rebels with the sons of liberty. In this time General Gage becomes the Governor and this is followed by the 1st and 2nd continental congree
  • 1st and 2nd Continental congress

Continental congress in response to Intolerable Acts, boycotts, non importation, and committees of correspondence. Committees force decisions to be made and inspect houses. Avoids mobs, militia forming in MA. The King reacts immediately taking gun powder, bullets, and canons. This all leads to the first battle with 273 British casualties and only 95 US casualties.
  • Olive Branch petition

The Americans create the olive branch petition as a kind of peace treaty, or compromise to find a way to cease the fires in Boston, repeal Intolerable acts, and to have the colonial rights defined. Sadly, the King sees this as a joke and does not follow any of it
