The Declaration shows that we have natural rights. People have the right to " alter or abolish " unjust government. It is our duty to abolish it. The idea of popular sovereignty which states that all government power comes from the people is also important.

This supported the idea of enlightenment because it encouraged separation of powers among the judicial, legislative, and executive branches, a concept from Montesquieu. They saw the government in terms of social contract. We allowed them to have of our " absolute freedom". They saw the government in terms of social contract in which "We the people of the United States" entered.
