    The Second Battle of Ypres started with a surprising attack from the Germans to an unexpecting Allies side. The Germans introduced their new gas weapons which worked to a minimal effect. The Allies were able to hold off the German attacks and maintain their ownership of Ypres. This image shows German troops emerging from behind their cloud of poisonous gas.

    The Battle of Loos was quite significant as it introduced the first use of poison gas by the British. The contention was for the Allies to push the central powers back at 2 points; Champagne and Vimy Bridge.They did so, but not to the extent they were hoping for.     The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle in world war one.The attack was planned by the Germans to attack a historically treasured area of France to humiliate them. The first use of flame throwers occurred in this battle by the Germans. At the end, both sides lost around 350,000 men each.     Romania declares war on Austria-Hungary and joins the Allied side after being promised land from the Allies.
  • Battle of Somme

    Battle of Somme
    One of the main reasons for the attack from the Allies was to relieve the slaughter at Verdun. It envolved a heavy British gun attack followed by an invasion. The Germans dug their trenches well and were able to survive the heavy guns well so when the British finally attacked it was a stalemate. This was the battle with the highest toll of lives.     USA declare war on Germany
    The United States of America declare war on Germnay because they took down America's finest vessel the Lusitania. There was no reason for taking down the boat which lead America to anger and therefore declaration of war against the Germans.
  • Third Battle of Ypres

    Unlike the previous two battles, the third battle of Ypres was an attack from the British. It was a success for the British as they were able to push forward more than a mile on the very first day and gain control of the land east of Ypres. This image is of British soldiers resting in their trench.

    The Armistice was signed in Redonthes after Germany had no other option due to British blockades starving the country. The official end of the war was the 11/11 at 11 o'clock 1918.

    Germany finally sign the treaty of Versaille to end the first world war. In the agreement, Germany gave up some territory and had to pay back to the allies.
