Acts passed by Parliament, (1763-1774).

  • Proclamation of 1763

    King George III declared all lands west of the Appalachian divide off limits to colonial settlers. This act closed down colonial expansion towards west beyond Appalachia. It also established three new mainland colonies and granting land to soldiers who fought in the seven years war also.
  • Currency Act

    The Currency Act was passed to assume control of the colonial currency system. The act stopped any new bills coming in reissue of the existing currency.
  • The Stamp Act

    This act imposed a tax on all paper documents in the colonies, when the British were in lots of debt from the seven years war. So they were looking and hoping to look for north America colonies as a revenue source. The colonial response to these acts were that they reacted by boycotting to riots and attacks on tax collectors.
  • Quartering Act of 1765

    This act required the colonies to house, supply, give food to British Soldiers. Locations and Conditions had to be good for these Soldiers to live in. The Colonists did not like this however and thought this was a violation.
  • Sugar Act

    This act was passed because it aimed to end the smuggling trade in sugar and molasses. This act also provided increased revenues to fund enlarged British Empire who were responsible, following the French and Indian War
  • Declaratory Act

    This act was passed because it was going to assert Parliament's authority to rule over the American colonies.
  • Townshend Act

    This act imposed duties on British china, glass, lead, paint, paper and tea imported to the colonies. Benjamin Franklin told the British Parliament that the colonies planned to start making their own goods rather than paying duties on imports. Colonists had went in favor of boycotting in British goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    This was a signal leading to the American revolution. This had impacted the relationship between American and British colonists. The colonial response was that they felt some sort of harassments from British soldiers/officials.
  • Boston Tea Party

    This was a protest where American Colonists were very angry and Britain for imposing taxation without representation. 342 chests of tea were dumped into the harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

    These were laws that were passed by Parliament after the Boston tea party and were to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest in which had a reaction to changes in taxation by the British Government.
  • Quebec Act

    This was a law passed by the British Parliament that had to do with the Canadian province of Quebec and contained several provisions related to religious freedom. People who were in the British colonies responded to this act with much fear and paranoids
  • Quartering Act of 1774

    This act was slight different from the quartering act of 1765. This one was applied to all of the American colonies. This new act allowed royal governors to find homes and buildings to station or house British soldiers.
