Many Japanese workers fled to Manchuria in order to build mines and factories. The invasion of Manchuria angered the League of Nations. The German bombed the ancient Basque city of Guernica in Spain. The city was reduced to rubble by the bombing. The effect it left was one of suffering.

    After an issue regarding the border, Japan's forces invaded China. Beijing, Nanjing (the capital), and other northern cities fell to Japan in 1937. Thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers were captured and killed. The invasion caused China to set up a new capital in Chongqing, while at the same time, China's communist leader, Mao Zedong continued to lead guerrillas and fight the Chinese.

    Hitler Announces Plans to Conquer Czechoslovakia and Austria
    Cause: Hitler announced plans to invade Austria and Czechoslovakia. After securing Austria, Hitler then moved to annex the Sudetenland, a primarily German speaking region of Czechoslovakia.
    Effect: France and Britain allowed Germany to take over the Sudetenland, thus expanding Hitler's power in Europe, and encouraging him to take over the rest of Czechoslovakia.

    The blitzkrieg was one of the German's new military strategies at the time that they were invading Poland. It is also known as lightning war, and includes the Germans using fast moving airplanes and tanks, and then having infantry forces follow them in order to surprise and overwhelm the opposing forces. The nonaggression pact signing by Hitler caused him to think of this new way of fighting so that he could quickly capture.

    After the declaration of war on Germany by the British and French, the armies finished mobilizing themselves. The British and French lined their troops up to wait for the Germans to attack them, but they never did. Germany also was lining their troops up in hopes that the French and British would attack. With both sides waiting, the Germans started calling this war a sitzkrieg. This words means "sitting war" and was used because of the lack of fighting.

    The surrender of France happened on June 22, 1940. This surrender happened because of the quick sweep that Hitler and the Germans did on France. They were able to get into France from the northern border in just ten days, giving France no time to react or really fight back. The effect of this surrender resulted in Germany taking over the northern part of France.

    After France fell, Great Britain stood alone against the Nazis. The new British prime minister, Winston Churchill, declared his nation wouldn't give up. Hitler focused on invading Great Britain. In the summer of 1940, Germany's Air Force, Luftwaffe, began bombing Great Britain. In May of 1941 Hitler called off the attacks. This taught the Allies that Hitler's attacks could be blocked.

    Hitler Invades Yugoslavia and Greece
    Cause: Wanting to expand his empire to the Balkans, Hitler then turned to invade Yugoslavia and Greece. These two countries both had pro-British governments, and resisted Hitler's plans. To combat this resistance, Hitler sent German forces to invade the nations.
    Effect: Yugoslavia surrendered within the span of eleven days, and Greece surrendered within seventeen. Germany now had total control over these two countries.

    Hitler began a plan called Operation Barbarossa, to invade and take over the Soviet Union. When the Germans reached the city of Leningrad, their plan was to starve its population. The city refused to be taken over, so the Germans were forced to move to the capital of Moscow. This invasion resulted in about about 500,000 German casualties, and gained no land.

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    December 7, 1941. American sailors at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii awoke to explosives. The Japanese had attacked. Within two hours of the first bomb, they had sunk or damaged 19 ships, including 8 battleships. President Roosevelt declared it "a date which will live in infamy." After, Congress accepted his request to declare war on Japan and the Axis Powers.
