  • 1953

    In Cuba a bright former army of mixed race who has risen from poverty takes power in a Coup D'etat.
  • 1954

    The CIA builds a tunnel from West Berlin into East Berlin to tap Soviet and East German communications.
  • 1958

    In Caracus,Venezuela a revolt against the Jimenez dictatorship is crushed.
  • 1959

    Castro starts the distribution of land in the Sierra Maestra that he promised during his time there.
  • 1962

    President Kennedy expands the ban against all imports from Cuba to include all goods made from or containing Cuban materials even if made in other countries.
  • 1965

    Martin Luther King leads 3,200 marchers from Selma to Montgomery.
  • 1971

    The US ends its trade embargo against Communist China. Americans can now sell or buy goods from China.
  • 1972

    North Vietnamese negotiators walk out of the Paris peace talks, complaining of the US bombing of their country.
  • 1973

    Israel launches its first counterattack against Egypt, which is unsuccessful. Israelis fear this time it might be their defeat and annihilation. The Soviet Union is airlifting supplies to Syria.
  • 1974

    North Vietnam makes probing attacks in Phuoc Long Province in South Vietnam. President Ford responds with diplomatic protests but no military force in compliance with the Congressional ban on all US military activity in Southeast Asia. The North Vietnamese find resistance by Saigon's forces surprisingly weak.
  • 1979

    US officials announce that the Soviet Union is giving low-key support to US efforts to release the hostages in Iran.
  • 1980

    In Poland the Communist government has found it economically necessary to stop subsidizing food prices. Prices have been rising, and citizens are protesting. Workers strike at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk – the first of many such strikes. It is the beginning of the decline of Communism in Europe.
  • 1990

    In Panama, Manuel Noriega leaves the Holy See embassy and surrenders to US forces. He is put on a military transport plane and flown to the United States.
  • 1993

    In Poland discontent with market reforms and the increase in unemployment following the collapse of Communism gives Communists a boost in parliamentary elections. Political power is going to a coalition of left-wing parties that intends to slow the pace of privatization and economic reform.
  • 1996

    The Communist Party of Nepal declares a "People's War."
  • 2000

    President Clinton signs a bill extending normal trade status to China. He says it will "extend our nation's unprecedented economic growth ... [and] reaffirm our own global leadership for peace and prosperity." The bill has been opposed by labor, human rights and conservative groups.
  • 2004

    Suicide bombers attack Shia festival-goers in Karbala and Baghdad, killing 140 people.
  • 2014

    Human Rights Watch: "Satellite imagery, witness statements, and video and photographic evidence show that Syrian authorities deliberately and unlawfully demolished thousands of residential buildings in Damascus and Hama in 2012 and 2013."
  • 2015

    In studying plankton, an international team of scientists find 35,000 species of bacteria, 5,000 new viruses and 150,000 single-celled plants and creatures. Of the 5,000 virus "communities" only 39 were previously known," according to BBC News.
