About half a million people gathered in East Berlin in a mass protest, that the Berlin Wall dividing communist East Germany from West Germany crumbled. East Germany leaders didn't plant to open up the gates completely to the protesters. But with so many people gathered in one area many could have died even without shots being fired, so they called to open the gates. Many climbed the wall and began chipping away at the wall itself with hammers and pickaxes.
