John Kennedy, followed his father and was a secretary for him during this time. He wrote his thesis on Great Britain which later became a book in 1940, "Why England Slept", (2009).

Two years later, he was in the South Pacific. There his boat, which he was in charge of, was hit by a torpedo and sank. He was commended and given a medal for his bravery and saving his men, (2009).

Joe Jr, John's older brother, was killed in action. His father Joe, said it was John's responsibility to take on Joe Jr.'s legacy. He wanted him to become the first Catholic president.

He left he Navy in 1944. In 1946, he began his run for congress. He won and in 1947 entered the congress as a Democrat.
