Poe was orphaned and adopted when he was only three years old. This is also said to have a significant affect on his writing. He did not get along with the man who adopted him.

Poe Joins the army as Edgar A. Perry and claimed to be 22 instead of 18. His rank was privet. In some ways I think that this could of infuenced his writing to be dark and morbid. Also his poem Tamerlane had to with independence and pride.

This storie's genre was Gothic romance short story. It was about a man who marries a beutiful dark eyed raven haired woman. When she dies of an illness he marries again, this time to a fair haired woman with blue eyes. When his new wife dies she rises from the dead she comes back as his old wife Ligeia. I personally take this story to be influenced by the deaths in his life. Especialy his wifes death.

The Raven was published. Poe was one of the first writers to write Mystery Fiction and Science fiction. He also revolutionilized writing using meaphors and symbolizm. Theses are some reasons why he was important to american literature. The Raven and other poems he wrote were very much influenced by his tragic backround.

Poe's wife died at the young age of 24. Some belive that her early death inspired some of his writing. If you read Poe's poems such as The Raven and Ligeia both have a plot where the mans wife dies.
