    Poseidon, unhappy with how he's been treated, wanted to get revenge on Odysseus. He was asleep at Ithaca, but his ship was turned to stone. "There he waited. As their sea-faring ship approached,
    moving quickly on her course, Earthshaker came up
    and turned it into stone. With the palm of his hand.." lines 195-197, stanza 160.

    The Mist of Athena
    Odysseus had been resting on the ship, and was placed on the shore of his homeland by his crew. While he was still asleep, Athena brought up a thick mist. The mist was so thick that Odysseus couldn't recognize his beloved homeland, Ithaca. "Meanwhile, Odysseus, asleep in his own land,
    woke up. He didn’t recognize just where he was.
    He’d been away so long, and Pallas Athena,
    Zeus’ daughter, had shed a mist around him,
    to make him hard for people to identify..." , lines 227-231, stanza 190.

    The Swineherd's Dogs
    Odysseus had been told to find the swineherd by Athena. He had found his home, but four vicious dogs were at the entrance. The dogs barked, howled, and ran towards him, but they were called off by the swineherd's master. "All of a sudden the dogs observed Odysseus. They howled and ran at him, barking furiously... but the swineherd ran up fast behind them, dropping the leather in his hands. Charging through the gate and shouting at his dogs, he scattered them..." Stanza 30, lines 29-36.

    Athena's Caecherdeni Trick
    While Odysseus slept by the rock, Athena turned into an odd creature. Caecherdeni were human like creatures that had blacked out and pale skin. They assumed the form of a normal human, engaged in a conversation with their victims, and then teleported them to a dark cave. To escape, you had to tell your deepest secret. Upon arrival, Odysseus began to make up a secret. Athena(she was till in the form of a Caecherdeni) revealed herself after complementing him on the lie he had told.
