During the berlin blockade, russia cut off all rail and road links to west berlin. It happened june 24th to may 1984. -

Gerta family: fritz, dominic, the dad, and the mom were all together in east berlin and were starting to think the government was up to something. They were deciding if they were going to move to west berlin or if they were going to stay. They decided that dominic and the dad were going to travel to the west in search for jobs and a house if they were going to move. -
Supplies Stock
During the cold war supplies including food and every day supplies were very low because the government thought that it would be too risky to take food from other countries besides berlin so all their supplies were manufactured in east berlin and sold locally though that may sound ok there weren't many options many peoples dinner contained of sausages, potatoes and carrots. Many foods that the citizens wanted ahd to be smuggled in on the black marked as sold for high prices -

Gerta was usually in charge of going to fetch food, all she wanted was a banana but she had to be smuggled in on the blackmarket. Not many people had enough money for shovels, aprons, etc... While gerta and fritz's mother was gone taking care of her mother who had broken her leg fritz and gerta instead of using the money sent from there mother they used in to buy plants for there fake garden, shovels, and aprons. -

The berlin wall went up on august 13 1961. The wall was meant to keep western people from the east. The put up yards of sharp barb wire and every foot was another guard. -

Gerta was waking up to find a wall in her back yard and her father and brother were gone to find work and new they would not return. gerta, her mother, and fritz were very sad they cried at home for hours. -
John F. Kennedy
President John F Kennedy traveled to berlin to offer hope to people living in the divided city. He seemed to have shown lots of courage and bravery and others were inspired to protest with kennedy. He stood on the wall loud and proud asking the government for freedom. Kennedy really did not need to do this for it was not affecting him or america but he did. -

Gertas family were almost done building the tunnel to freedom. There mom had heard the news that they were building a tunnel to the west and the signs there dad had sent to gertas eyes and a picture of were they needed to dig or ware the dad was digging. It did not say anything in the book that said john F Kennedy gave the speech but this is around the same area of time in the book.
