  • the bow street runners

    the bow street runners
the Bow street runners were formed by Henry fielding and have been called britains first proper police detectives. They carried pistols and a baton with a legal document inside it to tell the accused when to appear in court

  • End of the Runners.

in 1828 there were 4000 officers in London and a population of 1.5 million. despite the people's respect for the bow street runner organization, it ended. There simply wasn't enough of them so they could'nt be in too many places in one time.
  • Enter the police!

    Enter the police!
In 1829 Sir Robert peel started up the modern police force. There were just over 3000 men wearing the iconic blue uniform
  • 5 years later...

  • Time to setttle.

By now the public have become more acclimatized to the police in London. They are now respected and and are doing a good job. Things are looking good
  • First police woman

Women weren't part of the police force until 1915. They had there own force called the WPS (Womens police service) and were used to target Women an younger offenders
  • Now.

Since it origins the police now has 135,838 officers. To there diposal they have: Horses, armed responce units, dogs, Bullet proof armour and riot shields. is this saying that Britain has more dangerous criminals compared to the ones in Victorian England? Or if modern police equipment was available to the victorians would it be worse than the ones today?
