    John Dight
    John Dight bought Melbourne block 88 which had 26 acres of land. This block was along the Yarra River and it was sold for 481 euros.
  • John Dight leaves to go to Port Phillip

    John Dight leaves to go to Port Phillip
    In April, John Dights used The Sydney Herald to let everyone know that he was leaving to go to Port Phillip.
  • First steam powered flour mill

    The first steam powered flour mill was built in Melbourne. He built his water powered mill later on after the bricks from Tasmania were brought over.
  • The Dight Family

    The Dight family abandoned flour milling.
  • Selling the flour mill

    The Dight family sold the property of the flour mill to Edwin Trennery. Then Edwin Trennery subdivided the land.

    The mill on the river bank remained unoccupied until 1888, when flour millers Gillespie, Aitken and Scott constructed a new mill.

    The mill race rebuilt almost identically the same using bluestone blocks from Dight’s old mill building. This enterprise was sold to the Melbourne Flour Milling Company.

    The mill swapped owners for the last time before is was destroyed by fire. The mill can still be found at Dights Falls today.

    The timber of the weir was washed away in flood waters and The Minister for Public Works said that the weir would be rebuilt.

    There was a breach on 24 December and they had to rebuild the the weir.

    A heavy rainfall occurred and most of the timber decking, walings and rock fill had been washed away or they were damaged during the flood.
