In 1838 President Andrew Jackson ordered the Indian Removal Act, which caused the Cherokee to relinquish land east of the mississippi river. They were forced to journey westward to present-day Oklahoma. Their journey was called the trail of tears because of their difficulties along the way. (starvation, disease, and exhaustion)
