Mia's hero and role model was her brother Garrett. He was an adopted child. Garrett was always good at sports and athletics. Mia look up to him as a child.

Mia's brother Garrett was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is a blood disorder that causes the body to fail to produce enough blood platelets.
Because of this disorder, Garrett had to quit playing spots. -
In 1987 Mia joins the USA Womans National Team for the first time.
