Thomas Jefferson writes the Declaration of Independence, declaring the colonies free and independent from British rule. The document was actually a letter to King George explaining all of the "grievances" or complaints the colonists had against him and justifying their separation from Britain. -
Articles of Confederation Adopted
The Articles of Confederation was a document that outlined our first government after gaining independence. It wasn't very good, however, because it didn't give the government enough power, such as to enforce taxes. It had to be thrown out. -
U.S. Constitution Signed
The U.S. Constitution was a document that created our second and current government in the U.S. It has been upheld for over 200 years! -
