    American School for the Deaf (ASD) is founded
    ASD Official Website Originally called The American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb is established in Hartford, Connecticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudent and Laurent Clerc
  • National College for the Deaf and Dumb

    National College for the Deaf and Dumb
    A national college is authorized with the signing of the law (Enabling Act) by President Abraham Lincoln. This is the only accredited facility for the deaf in the US to offer college degrees. Edward Miner Gallaudet became the first president of the school and continued until 1910.

  • Learning Disabilties Association of America is created

    Learning Disabilties Association of America is created
    On today, a group of resourceful parents convened in a conference in Chicago. This conference articulated the cornerstones on which the field of Learning Disabilties is based. In January 1964, LDA became a national organization.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The final regulations as to how the law is to be implemented were published on this day. This act, passed by the US Congress, required all public schools that accepted federal funds to provide equal access to education for children with physical and mental disabilties. This was the predecessor for Individuals with Disabilties Education Act (IDEA).

  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    Handicapped Children's Protection Act
    Handicapped Children's Protection Act becomes law. The bill, which is a major civil rights victory, amends the Education for All Handicapped CHildrne Act. Parents are now allowed to assist in developing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for their children and are entitled to a hearing and can file suit if find IEP inappropriate.

    (Public Law 101-146, also referred to as IDEA) The Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1990 were signed into law on this day. This resulted in numerous changes to EHA.

    Signed by President Barack Obama, this campaign promises "funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act" and 12.2 billion dollars in additional funds
  • Forest Grove School District v. T.A.

    Forest Grove School District v. T.A.
    Argued before the Supreme Court this case addressed the issue of whether the parents of a student who has never received special education services from a public school district are eligible for reimbursement of private school tuition for that student under IDEA. On June 22, 2009 the Supreme Court held that these parents of disabled chilren can seek reimbursement for expenses whenever a public school fails to make a free appropriate public education (FAPE) available to a disabled child.
