  • Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech

    Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech
    Churchill is explaining that an imaginary iron curtian has been drawn across the continent of Europe. This iron curtian symbolizes the seperation between the east and the west. The eastern part of Euorpe is communist and allied with the Soviet Union and the west half of Europe is democratic and allied with the United States and other Allied Powers.

  • Truman Doctrine

    President Truman created this doctrine in order to aid the policy of containment. The goal of the doctrine was to help any country threatend by communism. Truman promised to send money to any European country that needed it, but he directly targeted Turkey and Greece. The Truman Doctrine was approved by congress immediatly.

    After WWII and the Holocaust the world had a lot of sympathy for the Jewish population and there need for a homeland and many Jews resettled in Palestine. For this the UN's General Assembly voted 33 to 13 in favor of the creation on the Jewish state under the condition that the Jews would respect th other religons that were living there.

  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan or European Recovery Program was signed by President Truman from the US. The plan consisted of providing money to European countries in need, George Marshall encouraged them to decide on what they needed finacially so that the US could provide more money on a broader scale.

  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Berlin Airlift was a strategy by the United States to get supplies into West Berlin because the Soviet Union had blockaded it. The Soviet Union had not allowed any trucks or trains inside the city in hope to starve the Berliners into submission.     Mao's Communist Government

    A new communist government was proclaimed in China under Mao, called the People's Republic. His governemnent was based on the support from the younger people of China who were easily influenced. The USSR was the first to reconize China's communist government but the US refused to reconize the governmnt because they were a threat to the US policy of containment.

    Korean War

    The Korean War was a war between the communist north supported by the USSR and the democratic south supported by the UN. The north and the south went back and forth and the north was eventually joined by China because of the fighing going on to close to the Yalu River, but neither side could completly conquer the other. As of this day Korea is still divded at the 38th parallel.

  • SEATO

    SEATO
    This was a millitary alliance signed with France, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand, and the United States. This millitary agreement promised that if any one country was attacked then the other countries would intervene and help them.

  • Warsaw Pact

    A treaty signed with Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. This treaty promised that if any one of these coutries were attacked then the other countries would come to their aid. The Warsaw Pact was the East's response to the Western pact called NATO.

    The north was supported by the communists and the south supported by the US. The war was very complicated because neither side could gain the upper hand. A millitary group known as the Viet Cong made the war even harder for the south because they supported the north and would sabotage the southern forces. The US was eventually forced to pull out of Veitnam because of the protest against the war back home, and the north united Vietnam under communism.

    Sputnik was the first artificial satellite launched into space from the USSR. The satellite was about the size of a beach ball and weighed 183.9 pounds and took 98 minutes to orbit Earth. This satellite started the Arms Race between the US and the USSR.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The invasion plan was to overthrow the new leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro. JFK came into power in the United States and was quickly briefed of the CIA plan developed during the Eisenhower admisnistration. The plan consisted of the CIA training Cuban exiles and sending them back to Cuba. JFK planned two airstrikes who would bomb Cuban air bases. The first airstrike failed to destroy most of Castro's planes so JFK canceled the second airstrike. The plan failed and the Cuban exiles were captured.

    Alliance for Progress
    The Alliance for Progress was an internationaly developed program created by the US. The alliance joined 22 Latin American countries, and its goal was to give financial aid to all the countries. Also the US provided millitary support to the dictaors to try and prevent the spread of communism.

  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    The US had photographs that revealed Soviet attacking missles being built on Cuba. The US saw this as a direct threat so JFK quarantined the island of Cuba to prevent any further missles from being built. JFK then regarded that any missle launched from Cuba to any part of the world was a direct attack on the US from the USSR.

    This treaty stated that the Latin American countries were not allowed to possess nuclear weapons, or to allow the storage/development of nuclear weapons on their territories by other countries. The treaty also included two other protocols, "protocol 1 involved an undertaking by non-Latin American countries that have territories in the nuclear-free zone," and "protocol 2 involved an undertaking by those powers which possess nuclear weapons."

    Egypt had set up a blockade around the Sinai Penninsula in hopes of attackonmg Israel but before Nasser the leader of Egypt could give orders to physically attck the Israelis launched attcks on Egypt as well as attacks on the West back of Jordan and Syria. Israel had ended up winning the war and their land size tripled.

  • Tlatelolco Massacre

    The mass killings in Tlatelolco Square were because of student protests in Mexico City. The students were protesting government policys. This massacre shocked the country, thousands were killed and the survivors were dragged away. After the killings the Mexican police tried to cover up what they had done and blamed the extremeists and communists for initiating the fights.

  • Salvador Allende becomes president of Chile

    Salvador Allende becomes president of Chile
    Salvador Allende became president of Chile in 1970, he was the first Marxist ever elected president in free elections. After being elected Allende moved quickly to create a communist nation in Chile, he immediatly established relations with Cuba and China, two other communist nations. Also Allende nationalized a number of US owned companies (Kennecott and Anaconda).

  • Munich Winter Olympics

    Munich Winter Olympics
    During the 1972 winter olympics held in Munich the Israeli althelets were captured and murdered by an Arab terrorist group known as the Black September. They were believed to be a faction of Afarat's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). After the massacre Israeli prime minister Gulda Meir gave instructions for agents to track down and kill the members of the terrorist group responsibe for the killings.

  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War
    Yom Kippur is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar and both Egypt and Syria took advantage of this day to launch a surprise attack on Israel. This is the first war where both the US and USSR were fighting on the same side, the instigated the UN security council series of resolutions. The war ended with a cease-fire agreement between the countries.

  • War Powers Act

    This act was passed in the US during Nixon's presidency. The act gave the president more power when declaring war. It said that he did not need acceptence from Congress when declaring war on another country. But the act did prohibit the President from engaging in military actions for more than sixty days, unless Congress approved.

  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    President Carter of the US invited Sadat the president of Egypt, and Begin the prime minister of Israel, to dicuss a peace agreement. This treaty became known as "Framwork for peace in the Middle East," and was the first time an Arab country and Israel had come together peacefully. After the treaty was signed the three men, Carter, Sadat, and Begin were awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978.

    This was an action taken by Reagon's Administration to supply weapons and supplies to Iran, and enemy of the US. In return Reagons Administration hoped for the release of American hostages in Lebanon who were held by Hezbollah terrorists loyal to Khomeini, Iran's leader. Reagon had gotten in a lot of trouble with the law and the press because he sent the weapons and supplies to the Iranians without first consulting with congress.

  • Tinnenmen Square Massacre

    Tinnenmen Square Massacre
    The Tinnemen Square massacre was a massacre of students, intellectuals, and labor activists who were protesting against Mao's government. Mao's Red Army had killed hundreds and thousands were injured. He described the act as necissary and the only way to control the unruly protestors. Mao had sent in infantry and tanks that would shoot down and even run over people under the tank treads.
