5 Critical Events that Shaped the Current Education System

  • Roxbury Latin School

    Roxbury Latin School
    The Puritans created the Roxbury Latin School which was the first traditional school for children. This school was the first to have textbooks and the first to create an educational system of core classes. This is important because Roxbury Latin School was the first stepping stone in a long sidewalk to our current education system. The first school blueprint had to start somewhere for new ideas to grow and develop.
  • The First High School

    The First High School
    Benjamin Franklin was the first person to think of adult learning. Franklin established a school for adult education because he thought education shouldn't stop after you grow. High school is so important for growing adults because this is your gateway to college. It is important to keep learning everyday, especially as students get older.
  • Practical virus Academic

    The National Education Association appointed a committee of 10 to create a more academic style educational system. This was important because a more standard approach was now used in public schools and their curriculum. Students were allowed to chose their electives instead of being forced to study a very strict curriculum. Having the choice to pick your class is important for student success, eagerness to learn, and to better prepare for your future.
  • Nation at Risk

    Nation at Risk
    The Nation at Risk program found that 13% of 17 year old's and 23 million adults were functionally illiterate in education. Once this mind blowing statistic was discovered something needed to be changed in the education system. The idea of life-long learning is now the goal of education. Life long learning is truly the whole point of school. If educators can teach student's to learn on their own, for the rest of their life, then they have succeeded.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    The United States public law, "No Child Left Behind" was created so the States Department of Education would monitor students more rigorously on their academic achievements. Implements such as, mandatory state testing are now being used more frequently which is important to make sure students are actually learning. The idea of not leaving a child behind is most important. If students are not learning from the way teachers are teaching, then educators need to change their approach.
