5.7 Ancient Astronomers.

    Eratosthenes (276-195 BC)

    He used the sun to measure the size of Earth. This is important because his measurement was fairly accurate and it proved that Earth was indeed round and not flat.

    Claudius Ptolemy (~100-170 AD)

    He formed the geocentric model. This model was accepted for years, but it was later on proven to be wrong.

    Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)

    Made the heliocentric model. The heliocentric model is the idea that all planets revolve around the sun.

    Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)

    The measurement of one minute of arc. He did this before the invention of the telescope.
  • Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727)

    He used the very first telescope. His discovery of seeing the other planets proved that the heliocentric model was correct, and for his beliefs he got put on house arrest for the rest of his life.
  • Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)

    He founded his 3 laws of planetary motion after working with Tycho for one year and then he stole Tycho's research and worked for 9 more years. These are the 3 laws Newton was able to use to establish universal gravitation.
  • Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

    He suggested that the laws of physics are the same throughout the universe. He expanded man's view of the universe.
