  • Education Act, Richard Austen Butler

    The 1944 Education Act was created as part of Winston Churchill's social reconstruction programme. The Act's Key features were:
    • Overhauled previous education legislations
    • Free compulsary schooling from the age of 5-15
    • Gave teachers control curriculum%u2019s and resource
    • Free education to the age of 18
    • Established the main areas of education Primary, secondary and Further education
    Tripartite hierarchical system:
    - Grammar
    - Technical
    - Secondary modern
  • End of the Second World War

    Time for Britain to organise and educate its nation.
  • Introduction of General Certificate of Education (GCE)

    O-levels and A-levels are introduced in the British education system to replace the Higher School Certificate. Subjects included Mathematics, English, French, Biology, History, Physics and Politics. The exams have come under some criticism with some stating that the qualifications have become devalued. A-Levels are still studied in today%u2019s education.
  • Newsom Report

    Key feature: Raised the issue that 13-16 year old, who were average or less than average should receive more educational resources.
  • Labour plans to end 11+ examinations

    This was carried out and aimed to abolish separatism in education. Grammar and some Private schools still sit entrance examinations.
  • Introduction of Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE)

    Certificate of Secondary Education was introduced for students not sitting O-Levels and A-Levels.
  • Leaving age raised 16

    The compulsory education leaving age, raised to 16 and is still the same to date, but change is looming.
  • Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister

    Her aim in the 80's was to design a new system for secondary education. This included: Giving school the choice to select students on their ability and aptitude. Schools would be closed if they could not gain enough students
  • THE BIRTH OF JAMES VYSE

    Combination of GCE 'O' level and GCE This was done due to government pressure to improve schools
  • OSBORNE NURSERY SCHOOL

  • Education Reform Act

    National Curriculum, including core subject (English, Maths,Science)
  • Introduction of GCSE's

  • BOLDMERE INFANT SCHOOL

  • Intorduction of Standard Attainment Tests (SATs)

    Introduced during the first year of my formal education. Test in english, maths and science for all students at the age of 5,7 and 11
  • Education Reform Act

    Introduced the National Curriculum into the Educational System. which set out to aim to: Provide pupils with the opportunities to lean and achieve. Promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
  • BOLDMERE JUNIOR SCHOOL

  • Creation of OFSTED

    Office for Standards in Education Aim to inspect all maintained schools in England
    Ensures that schools are meeting the expected standards. Schools used to be inspected by Local Education Authorities (LEAs)
  • Schools could Apply for specialist status

    Arthur Terry School was granted a specialized arts college status.
  • Dearing Report

    Created by Sir Ron Deering, to review the existing system and making proposals for its reform. Issues borugh up were the restructuring of the national curriculum and the post 16 qualifications.
  • ARTHUR TERRY SECONDARY SCHOOL 1995-2000

    Start of secondary education, from the age of 11-14 compulsary curriculum subjects were studied. 14-16 Compulsary GCSE subjects aswel as selected subjects. Compulsary:

  • Standards and Framework Act

    Developmewnt of new approaches to improve standards in disadvantaged areas. New categorise of Schools were anounced: -Community

    -Voluntary Aided
    -Voluntary Controlled
  • ARTHUR TERRY SIXTH FORM CENTRE

    Selected to stay at Arthur Terry Sixth Form Centre as they provided the appealing subject. First year of the new AS levels Compulsary subject: General Studies Selected subjects: Information Communication Technology

  • Curriculum Change

    The main change in the curriculum was the implementation of AS levels to break up A-levels and allow students to have more choice and flexibility in there education.
  • Tomlinson Report

    To review the AS/A2 examination grades, due to speculation that the exams were easy and the markers were not aware of the correct marking scheme.
  • Childrens Act

    Introducing Every Child Matters ECM, resources and activites to benifit childrens learning and well being.
  • New Key stage 3 National Curriculum

    The new curriculum focuses more on students:
    -Personalised learning
    -Increase flexibility for teachers
    -Increase pupil motivation
  • Introduction of Diplomas

    Starting in September 08 post 16 students can work towards achiving diplomas, a more hands on approach to learning.
