4.6 Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying

  • Bullying

Bullies pick on people that are smaller or weaker then them to make themselves feel better. "The aim of bullying is to cause embarrassment and humiliation in the subject"(Mental Emotional and Physical Health pg6). Bullying does not have to be physical; it can be verbal and electronic also.
  • Harassment

"Harassment is systematically bothering someone to the
point where the environment becomes dangerous in some
way"(Mental Emotional and Social Health pg6). When someone is harassing someone, it is most likely to feel dominant over the other. Harassing someone is also considered bullying because it makes the other person feel weak and helpless.
  • Intimidation

When someone bullies someone else, they usually pick on people who are smaller and weaker than the bully. "Even in its non-physical forms, bullying and harassment are meant to intimidate and terrorize the victim"(Mental Emotional and Social Health pg7).
  • Situation

I knew someone who being bullied by a girl on the same sports team as her. She would physically push her and yell at her to her breaking point calling her names and saying she is worthless. The victim did not want to tell her coach because the team would be mad at losing a player. Also, she had to play with the bully for the rest of the season or maybe the next year. She decided to confront the team about it and they stood up for her and the bullying stopped.
  • Situation Outcome

The outcome was eventually settled to peace, but it should have been handled sooner. The victim should have told an adult and she could have been an anonymous team mate reporting bullying behavior to a fellow team mate.
