San Francisco, California. Captain Charles McVay is told by Admiral William R. Purnell and Captain William S. Parsons that he was to take his ship (that morning) from Mare Island navy yard to Hunters Point navy yard. He was told the Indy would then take on board a "secret project' before departing for the Pacific.

On July 30th 1945 the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japenese submarine. Of a crew of 1196 men an estimated 300 were killed upon impact; nearly 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean.
