Adeline was elected class president by her classmates. Her friends came over to her house after school, wanting to congratulate her. However, Niang gave her a tight slap upon thinking that she had invited her friends without her permission. Adeline had to send her friends off immediately with the humiliation of letting them see how her true family really was. -
Arrival in Shanghai
When her father and stepmother were ready, Yen Mah and her full siblings went to Shanghai and moved into their father's house along Avenue Joffre. Two months later, her aunt, Ye Ye, and Susan arrived. When Susan arrived, she was too young to recognise her mother, Niang, who thus beat her soundly in frustration. Yen Mah stopped Niang which led Niang to declare that she would never forgive Adeline.
