Humans appear on Earth
The first pair of humans is discovered by the Vitani and are nurtured in a garden. -

Due to the free will of the humans a deal with the dark forces is made, allowing for creation to be tainted with a presence that infects the world. -

Due to an unforeseen natural disaster, not caused by humans, the fountains of the deep are unearthed and much of the current world is washed over. -

Due to the dire situation the Earth seems to be in space exploration is perused rapidly and a major breakthrough in fuel is discovered, leading to achievable extra terrestrial habitation. -
Fully immersive VR
VR gets to the point of Matrix, being indistinguishable from real life. Those less fortunate in life sell themselves to live alternate lives while their bodies are used for various things. -
EMPs
Multiple EMP blasts are set off around the world by a group of terrorist cells, regressing the world a fair amount. -
Portal opens
Triggered by the massive fluctuations in energy a portal between the long separated worlds opens, reuniting the races again. -
