  • Birth of the contraceptive pill

    Women were getting tired of common stereotypes, such as staying home, raising children etc. When the birth control pil was approved, it changed women all around the world, including inAustralia giving them more freedom as they didn't have any children. This led to protests about women's rights
  • First man in space

    Yuri Gagarin a russian astronaut, rode on the Vostok 1, which was launched into spaced and made a full orbit around Earth, making Yuri the first ever man to enter space.
  • JFK Man on the moon speech

    USA President John F. Kennedy presents a speech regarding space travel, stating that we should send a person to land on the moon and returning him back by the end of the decade. This suprised many people around the world, including Australians
  • Berlin Wall

    Shortly after the cold war, the berlin wall is put in the middle of Germany, which seperates itself into East Germany and west Germany. 4 zones were divided in Germany, each controlled by a country (USA, Britain, France & Russia) Russia was slowly turning against the other 3 allies thus splitting Germany, Democracy Vs. Communism
  • Largest nuclear bomb

    Tsar Bomba, designed by a team of russians, this bomb weighed 270,000,000 kg. When detonated it created a 35 km blast radius, making this the most powerful nuclear weapon and dangerous thing ever created by humans
  • Marilyn Monroe dead

    Marilyn Monroe, one of the world's most famous actresses and singers at the time, was found dead in her L.A home. The cause was a barbiturate overdose. Considered one of the most beautiful women of all time, her death shocked many people around the world
  • First woman in space

    Valentina Tereshkova, a russian astronaut, launches into orbit, becoming he first woman in space. Many woman were happy to see that they are able to defy such feats as well
  • I Have a dream

    Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his speech at the Lincoln Memorial in front of about 200,000 people. His 17 minute speech was about ending racism and discrimination and being equal to each other. This was a important moment for the Civil rights movement and to African-Americans
  • JFK Assassination

    While sitting in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, JFK was waving to many supporters of his presedential campaign. While driving he was shot in the head and died, causing shock and terror throughout the world. The assassinator Lee Harvey Oswald was caught, and ironically, was assassinatee as well
  • Beatles in the Us

    UK rock band The Beatles cause a frenzy in the US, with many fans loving their music. They were commercially successful in the US as well, selling many copies and perfroming at many concerts
  • Malcolm X Assassinated

    Malcolm X, another civil rights activist, was murdered in NYC while preparing to deliver a speech
  • First Kwanzaa Held

    Kwanzaa is a week long holiday from the 26th of December to the 1st of January, it was created by activist Maulana Karenga in order to bring African-Americans together and to celebrate their culture as one
  • Harold Holt disappears

    While swimming in Melbourne, Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappears, after a 2 days search one of the largest police searches in Australian history, police presumed he was dead. This was a shock to many Australians. To this day, his body has still not been found.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    While standing in a hotel balcony in Memphis, King was shot by man across the street, the perpetrator was James Earl Ray. He was finally caught a month later in London using a false Canadian alias. He was sentenced to 100 years in prison. The death of King was mourned by many African-Americans during that time.
