    Polio was a common disease that attacked the nervous system. Jonah Salk, an American physician, develop the vaccine against polio.
  • Geneva Summit

    It was a meeting in Geneva which the the U.S, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union came together to try to end the Cold War. It was successful in easing some tensions.

    Vietnam War

    The war was between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. The United States was South Vietnam's main ally. This war intensified the tensions of the Cold War. Three million people died during the war, and more than half were civilians.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    This act was passed with the intent of ending discrimination against anyone because of their race, color, religion, or national origin. It also guaranteed voting rights for any minorities.
  • Little Rock Nine

    The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students who got enrolled to an all white school. This decision to enroll them came after the Supreme Court had ruled segregation unconstitutional.
  • NASA formed

    Congress signed off on the creation of National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA is a civilian run agency that holds the responsibility of representing the United States in space activities.
  • JFK becomes president

    John F. Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States, and he also is the youngest man to ever hold office. He narrowly beat Richard Nixon, and sadly he was assassinated in 1963.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassinated

    He was a Baptist minister who became the leader of the civil rights movement. He also gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. He was assassinated while at the Lorraine Motel by a snipers bullet.
