  • Dwight D. Eisenhower

    Republican. He served in office from january 20th 1953 until january 20th 1961. He was a war hero in wwII and one of the leaders of the attack of Normandy beach (DDay). Passed away on March 28, 1969.

  • Geneva Conference

    The reason for this conference was to figure out a way to unify the country of vietnam. The countries that attended the conference were the United States, Soviet Union, People's Republic of China, France, and Great Britain. The final soltuion was that Vietnam would be split at the 17th parallel.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education overtruled Plessy vs Ferguson which said separate but equal places were equal. The case said that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. It was a mile stone for african americans eventualy leading to total desegregation in america.
  • Emmett Till

    The murder of emmett Till put media attention on the violent discrimination in the south and got civil rights movement going. His violent murder got the wheel rolling on the civil rights movement in the south. It eventualy lead to many anti discrimination parties and the media it brought showed the nation what was really going on.
  • Montegomery Bus Boycott

    The boycott started when rosa parks wouldn't give up her seat in the back of the bus to a white man and she got arrested.MLK was very important during the boycott and it was very successful. The Boycott lasted until december 21st 1956.
  • Interstate Highway System

    Known as the greatest public works project of all time. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act which created the Interstate Highway Sysytem.
  • Central High School

    Central highschool was the first desegragated school. Nine Black kids were blocked from entering the school but President Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort them to school. They later became known as the Little Rock Nine.
  • Sit in Movement

    The Sit-In Movement was when four African American college students went up to an all-white lunch counter and ordered. When they were refused service beacuse of their skin they sat there patiently.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) formed

    African American students formed SNCC in April 1960. This committee put focus on nonviolent efforts pursuing equality.Later, SNCC used the Voter Education Project so that African American people in the South could vote in the upcoming elections. they later changed their name taking out the non violent portion.
  • John F. Kennedy

    President Kennedy took office in 1961. He was a democrat and also the youngest president to die when he was assassinated. Very popular president in hard times.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    1,200 missiles from Cuba, were landed under Kennedy's presidency. Kennedy would not help the invasion. Castro's troops crushed them. JFK assumed full responsibility he was an honest president and with that the american people continued to trust in him.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Spy planes over cuban noticed nucular missles being made by the USSR. they used Cuba because it was within easy striking distance of USA.
  • March on Washington

    Over 200,000 people attended this march. It ended at the Lincoln Memorial where many speeches were spoken. MLK's I Have A Dream Speech is one of the greatest speeches ever written.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson

    Democratic president. In office from 1963 until 1969. "A Great Society" for the American people and their fellow men elsewhere was the vision of Lyndon B. Johnson.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    The Civil Rights act of 1964 outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities, and also in women. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    The ship named the Maddox was attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. The U.S claimed they did nothing to provoke this but they did by supporting South Vietnamese Commandos in North Vietnam and by using those ships to identify North Vietnamese radar station along the coastline.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    After the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Giving President Lyndon B Johnson a "clean slate." It authorized him to "all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."
  • Economic Opportunity Act

    The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was central to Johnson's Great Society campaign and its War on Poverty.It included several social programs to promote the health, education, and general welfare of the impoverished.
  • Assassiniation of Malcolm X

    Malcom X was a very radical civil rights leader. He was the polar oppisite of MLK jr. He did not believe in non violent tactics and in the long run was right. He was killed on febuary 21 1965 in front of his wife and children.
  • Selma to Montgomery March

    African americans began a march to Montgomery in support of Black Rights but are stopped at the Pettis bridge by a police blockade. State and local police attacked them with clubs and tear gas and drove them back into Selma. Incident was called "Bloody Sunday."
  • Black Panther Party

    The Black Panther Party was formed by Huey Newton. They were a militant group. The original goal of the party was self defense for the oppressed black people. J Edgar Hoover called it "the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States."
  • Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive was a series of fierce attacks on over 100 towns in South Vietnam. These attacks took place on the lunar new year holiday called Tet. It was a main turining point in the war.
  • Assassination of MLK Jr.

    In the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed by a single gun shot. He was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had come to lead a peaceful march in support of striking sanitation workers. About an hour later, he was pronounced dead at 7:05 PM at St. Joseph Hospital.
  • Richard Nixon

    Republican president that served in office from 1969-1974. he is most remeber for the watergate conspiacy and his resignation in 1974.
  • Apollo Test Project

    Nixon approved of a program between NASA and the Soviet space program. Resulting in the joint mission of an American and Soviet spacecraft linking in space; marking the end of the Space Race between the two superpowers.
  • Release of POW's

    In vietnam the release of American POW's began. In exchange for the U.S. to stop military involvement, they began to release POWs. Thousands of american POW's were released.
  • Watergate Break-In

    Five men were arrested because they were trying to plant "bugs" in the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The Watergate break-in was something Nixon was involved in and his extreme paranoia forced him to resign as president.
  • Gerald R. Ford

    Ford was a republican president from 1974-1977. He took over as president when Nixon stepped down in 1974. He was handed over a troubled economy and many other hardships when he took over as president including dealing with the watergate break in.
  • President Nixon Resigns

    Nixon lost almost all of his supporters after he personaly messed up in the watergate conspiracy. Because of his actions he was basically pushed out of the oval office and turned in his official resignation on 8/9/1974.
  • President Ford Pardons Watergate Scandal

    Out of the goodness of his heart, Ford pardons Nixon of all charges in the watergate scandal. He just wanted everything to be over and for there to be an end to this long and tedious scandal.
