  • Dwight Eisenhower is inagurated into the presidency

    Dwight Eisenhower is inagurated into the presidency
    Dwight Eisenhower or "Ike" as some liked to call him, was our 34th president. Ike was a five star general in the United States army during WW2, and served as the supreme commander of the allied forces in europe. During the 1952 election, Eisenhower won popularity by advertising on the television with his phrase "I like Ike." One of his many achievments was personally going to korea, and threatning nuclear warfare to end the korean war.

    McCarthy Trials
    these trials during Eisenhowers presidency were due to the "red scare" which was the fear of communism. McCarthy took many people to trial, and accused them of being communist. Because of this the government lost many asian specialist.
  • Brown vs. Board of education

    Brown vs. Board of education
    In this trial congress overrules 1896 "Plessy vs. Ferguson." Congress rules that segregation in schools is unconstituional.
  • Mongomery bus boycott

    Mongomery bus boycott
    The Montgomery bus boycott began when a young black woman named Rosa Parks was arrested for nit giving up her seat in the back of the bus to a white man. After this Martin Luther King Jr. advocated that all blacks no longer ride the buses, but walked to where they needed to go. The boycott began in 1955 and ended on december 20th 1956, when buses were desegregated.

    After the supreme court rulled segregation in schools unconstituional in brown vs. board of education, the NAACP enrolled nine black students in the originally all white school Little Rock Central High School. When the nine kids tried to go to the school, angry white mobs wouldn't let them enter. Finally Eisenhower had to send the national gaurd to escort the black students in.

    In 1960, four black students began a sit-in at a sgregated Woolworth's lunch counter. These four college students influenced many non-violent civil rights movements like the SNCC.
  • John F. Kennedy is inagurated into the presidency

    John F. Kennedy is inagurated into the presidency
    John Kennedy was new and hip when it came to the presidency. He and his wife Jacquline brought an air of youth and glamour to the white house. During the Cuban missile crisis, while the world was on the brink of all out nuclear warfare between the USSR and the United States, Kennedy was able come to a peaceful agreement.

    freedom riders were civil rights activist who rode interstate buses through the south, advocating civil rights and registering african americans to vote
  • The Berlin wall

    The Berlin wall
    The Berlin wall was built to divide west Berlin from the surrounding east Germany and east Berlin. West Berlin was democratic, while east Berlin was communist. The Berlin wall symbolized the tension of the time period between communism and democracy. The wall was torn down November 9th, 1989.

    Evers was a civil rights activist from mississippi, who after returning to his home after a meeting with NAACP lawyers, was shot to death just outside of his front door
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    The march on Washington was a peaceful march led by black civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Many civil rights leaders spoke once they reached Washington. MLK delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech infront of the lincoln memorial.

    Birmingham, lovingly nicknamed "bombingham" was the center of many violent acts against civil rights. One of the most famous was the bombing at the Birmingham baptist church. Four young girls were killed in the bombing.
  • JFK is assasinated

    At 12:30 pm, friday the 22nd, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assasinated at Dealey Plaza in Dallas Texas. Kennedy was shot while riding in the presidental motorcade with his wife Jacquline, Texas governor John Connally, and Connally's wife Nellie. Kennedy was assasinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was acting alone.

    Fun fact: LBJ was one of four to serve in all four elected federal offices. He was Kennedy's vice president, but when Kennedy was assasinated Johnson assumed the position as president, and then was re-elected in 1964 with the platform of "the great society"

    Richard Nixon is inagurated
    A republican, Nixon became famous for the Watergate scandal. Nixon began a process called "vietnamization" where the United States would slowly pull out american troops and push more of the fighting to the south vietnames. In a contradicting to his conservative nature move, Nixon continued the "Great Society." Nixon ultimately left the presidency in 1975.

    on July 20th Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Not only were they the first americans on the moon, but they were also the first humans to ever walk on the moon

    Gerald R. Ford is inagurated
    Ford was the 38th president of the United States. Ford became President due to Nixon's resignation.
  • The fall of Saigon

    The fall of Saigon
    Soon after americans pulled out of Vietnam the North Vietnames army began to march to the south Vietnames capitol Saigon. Without any american aid south Vietnam quickly collapsed and was taken over by north Vietnam. The remaining americans, and some 140,000 southern Vietnames were frantically evacuated from the capitol.
