  • Battle of Stalingrad

    This was a brutal military campaign between Russian forces and Nazi Germany during World War II. The battle was one of the largest, longest and bloodiest engagements in modern warfare: from August 1942 through February 1943, nearly two million people were killed or injured in the fighting.
  • D-Day

    The Allies stormed the beaches at Normandy, France. it was the largest seaborne invasion in history.
  • U.S. drops atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.

    Killing thousands, this changed the brutality of warfare forever and marked the beginning of Japan's surrender and the end of WWII
  • Taft-Hartley Act

    This act outlawed the "closed" shop, made unions liable for damages that resulted from jurisdictional disputes among themselves, and required union leaders to take a non-communist oath.
  • Mahatma Gandhi Assassinated

    While fighting for the rights of Indians through peaceful protests and non-violent actions, he was murdered by Nathuram Godse.
  • Executive Order 9981

    President Harry S. Truman. It abolished discrimination "on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin" in the United States Armed Forces. This marked a huge step in racial equality and social justice.
  • The Korean War Begins

    A war breaks out between North Korea and South Korea when North Korea invaded South Korea, crossing the 38th parallel, following a series of skirmishes along the border.
  • Twenty-second Amendment

    This limited the number of terms a president could serve as FDR was the only man to serve more than 2. One slogan they used was "No man is good three times".
