1920s and Prohibition

  • Kansas

    Kansas becomes the first US state to put prohibition in their constitution
  • Volstead Act

    The senate passes the Volstead act which is the first step to moving toward the 18th amendment. This bans intoxication beverages.
  • 18th Amendment

    The 18th Amendment is ratified by 36 states. It bans the production, transportation, and selling alcohol. People can still consume it though.

    They pass the Volstead act and it goes into affect January 17, 1920
  • The 1920s

    Since the prohibition started, people have created a black market for the beverages and other illegal things they want. This resulted in many problems such as gangs and a rise in crimes.
  • 1929

    There is a major gang called Al Capone's gang in Chicago. The government starts to try and put a stop to things like this gang.
  • Herbert Hoover

    Herbert gives a speech to the president to try and put an end to the prohibition act. He thought if the prohibition was gone so would be all the violence.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt

    As soon as Franklin becomes president he passes the Cullen Harrison act. It allows for some alcoholic beverages to be legal. People still want a complete end to the prohibition act.
  • 1933

    The US congress tries to put an end to the prohibition act by bringing up a new amendment for the constitution
  • End to the Prohibition

    The prohibition comes to an end by the 21st amendment which was added to the constitution.
