1920s and Prohibition

  • Rev. Lyman's Six Sermons of Intemperance

    One of the first time alcohol was very frowned upon came from a reverend. He implied that god himself hated people who drank. The Reverend said that drinking led to bad thought and choices and people took this very seriously.
  • Maine

    Maine was the first place to ban the sale of alcohol. In Portland a mayor Neal Dow had collected signatures to pass this bill.
  • The Choir

    In 1873 a group of women actually sang against banning alcohol. This is just one example of how many people were against this bill trying to be past.
  • The Prohibition Party

    Kansas was the second state to ban the production and sale of alcohol. After this was passed Carry Nation went around smashing saloons. This was extremely controversial at the time.
  • The League

    In 1893 there was an Anti-Saloon League formed from Reverend Howard. They believed that alcohol was a drug. They taught that it could not be used recreational and it was dangerous.
  • The Mass March

    In Washington D.C, there was a march that involved groups like the Women Christian Temperance Union and the Anit-Saloon League. They went to demand a prohibition amendment to the constitution.
  • 18th Amendment

    This was an amendment that was made, it said that alcohol production, transportation and sale was illegal.
  • Rum Rows

    A man by the name of William McCoy made trades of liquor. He traded it through the country and made lots of money smuggling alcohol.
  • The Great Depression

    The stock market crashed. This caused everyone to be basically bankrupt. America fell into a big problem.
  • The 21st Amendment

    In December of 1933 the 21st Amendment was made. This repealed prohibition.
