    Panama Canal

    Panama became the crossing point for ships and supplies, but there was land that had to be crossed so they decided to make a canal that cut all the way through Panama to make passage easier. Construction began in 1881, but America did not get involved until 1904, though not without lack of trying. The Canal opened on August 15, 1914.

    William McKinley Becomes President

    William McKinley wins 1896 election against William Bryan. William was assassinated and died on September 14, 1901. Because of his death, Teddy Roosevelt as his VP became President until the end of the term

    Roosevelt becomes president after William McKinley died on September 14, 1901. He then ran again and won the presidential election of 1904 against Democrat Alton Parker.

    William Taft wins the 1908 election against William Bryan and Eugene Debs.
  • Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

    In an effort to make sure the women stayed at work, the mangers had locked the doors to the work rooms so when the fire broke out, the women were unable to escape. The elevators only held so many, the fire escape ladders broke off the wall, and none of the fire departments ladders were tall enough to reach the taller levels. Women were jumping out windows and falling to their deaths because there was no other way out. 146 people died, 123 of which were young women.

    Woodrow Wilson won the election of 1912 against Republican William Taft, Socialist Eugene Debs, and Bull Moose Teddy Roosevelt. Wilson won the 1916 election also.

    World War One

    The war started after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand from Austria, this sent Europe into a frenzy, resulting in Austria declaring war on Serbia. America entered the war in 1917 after multiple factors came into play. The war ended on November 11,1918 when the Treaty of Paris was signed.

    The Adamson Act of 1916 gave workers an eight hour work day and also time and half for overtime
  • Espionage Act and Sedition Act

    Espionage Act of 1917 and Sedition Act of 1918, were created to keep people from protesting the war.
  • America enters World War One

    America declared war on Germany in 1917 after staying neutral for 3 years. America joined the war effort after the Germans had sunk the passenger boat Lusitania which had Americans on board, and also after the Germans sent the Zimmerman note to Mexico asking for their help. These two actions infuriated Americans.

    The Selective Service Act was the act that formed the draft to make the Army larger.

    Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918

    The Spanish flu pandemic began for America in Kansas in spring of 1918, and because of the war going on, the military spread the sickness like wildfire, killing thousands. A second wave started in Spain during the fall of 1918 which was much deadlier, killing more soldiers at the time than the war itself. The pandemic eventually tapered out in 1920

    The first Red Scare in America was after the Russian Revolution began in 1917. Americans for afraid of communist infiltrating the U.S. during 1919. Many so called Radicals were rounded up, but they were innocent.

    The 18th amendment went into effect in 1920 and gave the women of America the vote.

    The 18th Amendment went into effect in 1920, prohibiting the consumption, production, or transportation of alcohol. After much debate the 18th Amendment was revoked in December 5, 1933, when the 21st amendment was put into play.
