The Telephone is Invented

1876

Alexander Graham Bell invented the first-ever telephone, made up of various metal reeds. After completion, he said the famous words to his assistant, "Mr. Watson - come here, I want to see you."

The Great Sioux War of 1876

Feb 8, 1876

Gold had been discovered on Native American territory of the Black Hills and settlers began taking over the land. The US government tried to acquire the land in 1875 and place the natives in reservations, but the Sioux refused. Later, the US government forced all of the Sioux into the reservation saying that all natives found outside the reservation would be treated as hostiles and handled with force, this is what started the Great Sioux War.

Rutherford Hayes Presidency

Rutherford Hayes becomes the 19th President of the United States.

The Lightbulb is Invented

Oct 21, 1879

Thomas Alva Edison invents the first-ever lightbulb after a year of trials and attempts. The concept was not new to the age, but Edison was the first to succeed in producing a lasting model.

James Garfield Presidency

Mar 4, 1881

James Garfield becomes the 20th president of the United States.

James Garfield Assassinated

Jul 2, 1881

James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau in the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station. Garfield's Vice President, Chester Arthur, is then made President.

Grover Cleveland Presidency

Grover Cleveland becomes the 22nd president of the United States.

The First Gas-Fueled Car is Patented

Jan 29, 1886

Karl Benz invented the first internal-combustion engine in 1885 but received the patent for his first three-wheeled design the Motorwagen in 1886.

Benjamin Harrison Presidency

Mar 4, 1889

Benjamin Harrison becomes the 23rd president of the United States.

The Wounded Knee Massacre

Dec 29, 1890

During the United States' efforts to force natives into reservations, Colonel Forsyth was confiscating all the weapons of the Miniconjou Indians when a gun accidentally went off and the soldiers open fired in response. Since most natives had already surrendered their weapons, they were defenseless and approximately 300 natives were killed.

Grover Cleveland's 2nd Presidency

Grover Cleveland becomes the 24th president of the United States, his second time being President.

William McKinley Presidency

William McKinley becomes the 25th president of the United States.

The Spanish-American War

The war first began with Cuba's attempts at independence from Spain, but Spain declared war on the US after they assisted Cuba in their fight for independence.
