  • James A. Garfield is assassinated

    James A. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau in Washington, D.C., and soon after died in Elberon, New Jersey. His motive was a sort of revenge against Garfield for an alleged political debt. Vice President Chester A. Arthur succeeded to the presidency shortly after.
