  • Election of 1800

    Jefferson and Burr both received 73 electoral votes and it took 35 ballots to finally reach a decision and Jefferson became president. This brought the 12th amendment.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Napoleon needed money so he sold the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson believed in strict construction but would be highly discriminated if he didn't purchase the land so he bought if from Napoleon and sent Lewis and Clark to scout out the land.
  • Official ownership of the Louisiana Territory is signed over to the United States

  • 12th Amendment

    The Vice Presidential position will no longer be held by the candidate with the 2nd most votes. Each Presidential candidate must run with a Vice Presidential candidate.
  • Burr and Hamilton duel

    Hamilton is murdered by Burr. On February 19, 1807 Burr is also charged of treason but found not guilty. He basically starts screwing up a lot and people don't like him.
  • The Industrial Revolution

    In 1806 we begin to see more roads being built.
  • Orders of Council

    Neutral countries need permission from Britain to trade with France and its colonies
  • Election of 1808

    Jefferson didn't run again and James Madison won over Charles Pickney
  • Non-intercourse Act

    No trading with Britain or France because we want to remain neutral.
  • May 1810 Bill

    We would repeal the Non-intercourse Act if one of the two countries lifted their restrictions on us, but not the other. France lifted our restrictions and we continued trade with them.
  • War of 1812

    On August 16th we surrendered Detroit without a shot fired but in September we won the Battle of Lake Erie. We retook Detroit in the Battle of Theemes. In April 1814 Britain defeated Napoleon and in August they invaded Chesapeake Bay. This is what causes Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner. It ended with the Treaty of Ghent on December 24th, 1814.
  • Madison signs a Declaration of War against Britain

  • Election of 1816

    James Monroe becomes president. He holds the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the political system of European powers was different than the U.S. and we would not interfere with existing European controlled colonies.
  • Second Bank of the United States

    Established in 1816, but nearly went bankrupt in 1819.
  • Tariff of 1816

    British goods flooded the market after the War of 1812 and this placed a tax on imported goods so that America didn't lose all their money to British goods.
  • The Industrial Revolution

    Money goes aside to make the Erie canal, which is completed and opened in 1819. This helps lead to the invention of the steamboat by Robert Fulton "Clermont"!!!!!!!
  • Rush-Bagot Pact 1817

    Britain is to remove their Navy from the Great Lakes.
  • Convention of 1818

    Set the boundary between U.S. and Britain at the 49th parallel.
  • Panic of 1819

    This was the first major depression and it was due to poor banking policies. Farmers couldn't keep up with their debt because they produced too many crops and the prices dropped. Banks wanted their loans back from farmers but farmers couldn't pay. Landon Cheves became the president of the Second Bank of the United States and reduced bank employee salaries and cut back on loans to save the bank.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave state but it would upset the balance of free and slave states. So we decided to let Maine into the Union as a free state at the same time to keep the balance equal.
  • Election of 1824

    5 "republican" candidates ran for office, but so many men ran that the votes were too evenly spread and people began dropping out of the race. Calhoun dropped out and supported Jackson, then Clay was ruled out and supported Adams in a corrupt bargain because he believed Adams would make him Secretary of State. SO in the end, John Quincy Adams won.
  • Tariff of 1828

    This enraged the South and was called the "Tariff of Abominations".
  • Election of 1828

    Andrew Jackson became president with Martin Van Buren as his VP. He stood for a message of equal rights and popular rule and became the first trans-Appalachian president.
  • The Industrial Revolution

    Post Office Act of 1792 takes into affect and by 1830 there are 8000 post offices.
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830

    Granted the Native Americans the land of Kansas and Oklahoma.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Turner and 20 armed slaves and free blacks slaughtered their white neighbors. It didn't take long to track Turner down and execute him.
  • Force Bill 1833

    Reduced Tariff rates to modest levels of 1816 by 1842. Gave the US Army the right to go to South Carolina and make them comply.
  • The American Anti-Slavery Society forms

    Abolitionism begins growing popular and people are speaking out against slavery
  • Treaty of New Echota 1835

    All Cherokee had to relocate to new land
  • Election of 1836

    Martin Van Buren (Democrat) ran against 4 Whig candidates and became the new President.
  • The Industrial Revolution

    John Deere invents the first steel plow. Mass producing causes produce prices do drop and business to increase.
  • Panic of 1837

    Van Buren inherited Jackson's financial policies and had to clean up after the mess he made
  • Election of 1840

    William Henry Harrison becomes president through the "log cabin and hard cider" campaign but dies after just over a month in office and is replaced by his VP, John Tyler.

    Several immigrants are from Ireland, Germany, and England. Although the English avoided living in the South. By 1850, 43% of Americans are foreign-born and many are Catholics.

    The US pays Mexico $15 million for more than one third of their territory.
