17.2 Timeline

  • Start of Chinese Civil War

    Began in April of 1927. Between Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong. Caused by opression by landlord class of millions of peasant farmers
  • Berlin Airlift

    The airlift lasted 11 months. Landed every 3 minutes with 2,400 pounds of supplies. Overall 277,000 flights with 2 million tons of supplies delivered to Berlin.
  • Berlin Blockade

    THe Berlin Blockade begins. The Soviets blocked highways, railroads, and shut off electrical power to West Berlin. Was the first major international Cold War crisis.
  • Formation of NATO

    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Consisted of the United States, Canada, and 10 European nations. Gave free military and economic support to NATO nations.
  • National Security Council Report NSC-68

    Suggest builing up massive inventory of weapons to stay ahead of the Soviets. Said the United States should lead the fight against the Soviet expansionism. Bigger Army and Navy were the best weapons.
  • Korean War

    THe North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel. There was Communism in the North pro-Western in the South. Both wanted Korea to be United as one again but could not decide on a government type.
  • President Truman fires General MacArthur

    MacArthur disagreed with Truman's policy of limited war. He recieved a hero's welcome. He was with the 69% of the public that disagreed with Truman.
  • Formation of Warsaw Pact

    Soviet and Eastern-Europe alliance was formed. Mutual defense treaty. Between eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe.
