Henry Hudson was an Englishmen commissioned by the Dutch to discover the fabled Northwest Passage through North America. While Hudson never found such a passage, he is credited for finding the Hudson River and claiming modern-day New York for the Dutch.

The famous marriage of Pocahontas, the daughter of the Powhatan tribe chief, and John Rolfe, a Jamestown settler from Europe, temporarily eased relations with the Powhatan tribe and English settlers.

John Rolfe's introduction of a new, native tobacco crop seed saved the failing settlement of Jamestown. Without this, English settlement may have completely failed. The crop became widely successful and opened opportunity for additional settlements.
