Vasco De Gama landed in India in August of 1498. He returned home with with a small amount of jewels and spices. This brought about interest to find a new path to the Indies.

In 1513 and again in 1521, Ponce de Leon explored Florida, which he at first thought was an island. Ponce de Leon was searching for wealth and not the "fountain of youth." He was killed by a Native arrow.

In 1519, Cortes set sail from Cuba bound for Mexico. His victory was because of a Native captive that was able to translate the Indian languages for him. Cortes got in close with Moctezuma and was believed to be the god. He then attacked and drove Natives out.

Francisco Pizrraro crushed the Peru Incas on November 16, 1532. Pizarro added a large amount of wealth to the Spanish coffers.

Jacques Cartier journeyed hundreds of miles up the St. Lawrence River. This is one of the events that caused the Spanish to fortify and settle their North American borderlands.

On September 8, 1565 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine. St. Augustine was built to block French ambitions and to protect sea-lanes to the Caribbean.

Setting sail in 1577, Francis Drake sailed his way around the planet. He arrived back in England in 1580 with Spanish wealth. He is one of the most famous "sea dogs" that seixed Spanish treasure ships and raided Spanish settlements, during a time of peace between Spain and England

Using the profits from colonization to launch 130 boats to attack England. Spain called this the "Invinclible Armada." However, when they entered the English Channel the English sea dogs fought back and defeated the Spanish's "Invincible Armada." This marked the beginning of the end of Spanish imperial dreams.

On August 18, 1604, Spain and England signed a peace treaty in London. This peace treaty is known as the Treaty of London. After signing the Treaty of London Spain and England stayed at peace until 1625.

After setting sail in late 1606, the Virginia Company's three ships landed near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, where Indians attacked them. This forced them to move up the bay and eventually choose a location on the bank of the James River. There, on May 24, 1607 they disembarked and called the area Jamestown.

After torturing and defeating the Pueblo peoples, the conquistadores proclaimed the area the province of New Mexico, in 1609. The capital, Santa Fe, was founded the next year.

In March of 1614, the First Anglo-Powhatan war was ended by a peace settlement. This peace settlement was then sealed by the marriage of Pocahontas to John Rolfe. This was the first interracial union in Virginia.

On March 25, 1634, the second plantation and fourth English colony was founded. This colony was founded by Lord Baltimore and was called Maryland. Lord Baltimore embarked upon this venture only for the financial profits and partly to create a haven for his fellow Catholics.

On March 18, 1644, the Secong Anglo-Powhatan War began. The Indians made one last effort to dislodge the colonists but were again defeated. The peace treaty 1646 ruined all hope of assimilating the Indians into the Virginan Society or of coexisting.

On March 15, 1607, Carolina was formally. Carolina was named after Charles II. It was Created after the king granted the Lords Properties to eight of court favorites.

In the 1680's, Robert de La Salle led an expedition down the Mississippi River. This caused the Spanish to develope settlements around 1716 in Texas.

In May of 1712, following much friction with governors, North Carolina was formally sparated from South Carolina. North Carolina was dubbed "a vale of humility between two mountains of conceit" because of it's location between Virginia and South Carolina.

On February 12, 1733, The colony of Georgia was founded. Georgia was the last of the thirteen colonies to be planted. Georgia's purpose was to serve as a buffer to protect the Carolinas from vengeful Spainards and hostile French. Georgia was named after King George II of England. Georgia was launched by philanthropists.
