    Edgar Allan Poe was born to actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe in Boston. His father abandoned the familyin 1810 and his mother died of consumption a year later. A successful Scottish merchant, John Allan took Poe home and gave him the name Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was bapitized by Allan's family in Episcopal church in 1812.

    Poe went with his foster family to England in 1815 where he attended the grammer school in Irvine, Scottland. Then he went to Londan and studied at a boarding school in Chelsea. In 1820 him and his family moved to Richmand and he joined the University of Virginia to study language.In 1827 Poe traveled to Boston and worked as a clerk and newspaper writer.

    In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under the name, Edgar A. Perry. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which provided the setting for "The Gold Bug" , "The Balloon Hoax", Tamerlane and Other Poems, which Poe published at his own expense, sold poorly. In 1830 Poe antered West Point. He was dishonorably discharged the next year, for intentional neglect of his duties apparently as a result of his own determination to be released.

    In 1826 Poe became engaged to Elmira Royster, but her parents broke off the engagement. In 1836 Poe remarried his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm. She bust a blood vessel in 1842, and remained a virtual invalid until her death from tuberculosis five years later.

    Poe suffered from depression and some madness, he attempted suicide in 1848. In September of the following year he disappeared for three days after a drink at a birthday party. Poe also was a heavy drinker.
