Edgar Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts to two actors Elizabeth Poe and -
Adoption
When Edgar is two years of age, his mother, Elizabeth dies and Mr. and Mrs. John Allan adopt him. Allan was added to his name at this time. -
Education
When Edgar Allan is six years of age he attends his first year of school in England. -
Returns to the United States
In 1820 at the age of eleven, he returns to the U.S. to continue his schooling at the academy of William Burke. There he was successful in sports. -
College
At the age of seventeen, Edgar attends the University of Virginia. The following year he dropped out because John Allan would not give him any money. -
Army
In this year Allan wrote his first book, "Tamerlane and the other Poems." Also he joined the U.S. army and had a rank of sergeant major. -
On the Move
At the age of 20, his adopted mother, Mrs. Allan, dies. He returns home(back to England)and joins West Point. -
End of the Army
Poe gets kicked out of West Point and begins to write. He submits a number of stories to magazines and gets rejected.In the following two years John Allan dies and leaves Edgar nothing in his will. -
Marriage
At the age of twenty-seven, Edgar marries his cousin, Virgina who was only thirteen. -
A breakdown
Poe writes "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The following year he breaks a blood vessel while playing the piano. -
On the Move Again
In 1844, Poe moves back to New York City. He wrote "The Balloon Hoax"and deceived people by his story. -
A BIG hit
At the age of thirty-six, Poe writes "The Raven." Working 14 hour days he still couldn't make a living. -
Til Death do us Part
This year Poe's wife, Virginia, dies from tuberculosis. -
Coming to an End
He leaves NYC and goes to Richmond.There he joins "Sons of Temperance" to stop drinking. -
Death
On this day,Edgar Allan Poe dies..Three days earlier he was found half conscious and taken to the hospital.
