    Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Masachussetts, January 19, 1809, to parents David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Hopkins-Poe.

    Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia, after his mother died and hius father deserted the family.

    From 1815-1820, Poe Attended Manor School (which later became the setting for his story "William Nelson")
  • Engaged!

    Poe got engaged to Elimira Royster, but her parents broke off the engagement.
  • College

    From 1826-1827, Poe attended The University of Virginia, but was expelled for not paying outstandiong gambling debts.
  • Army

    Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under an assumed name, Edgar A. Perry, and was sent to Sullivan's Island (which provided settings for his stories "The Baloon Hoax" and "The Gold Bug")
  • The Decade

    From 1833-1843, Poe was a staff member for several different magazines, during which time he wrote some of his best known stories ("The Fall of The House of Usher", "Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym", and "The Pit and The Pendulum")

    Poe was found in a delirious condition in a gutter in Baltimore, and died on October 7, 1849. His autopsy revealed that a probable cause of death was drug overdose, but the sure cause is unknown.
