Walter Raleigh was an English adventurer and writer. He was sent to Roanoke Island by Queen ELizabeth. He and 100 other men arrived too late to harvest crops and their supplies were dwindling.

James River founded Jamestown,Virgina. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in North America. Jamestown is named after James River. The Pilgrams had already had an established settlement here for 13 years.

The House of Burgesses was the first established assembly in America. Governor George Yeardly was the one who established it. The members of the House of Burgesses contained of a governor, the governor's council, and six representatives.

Oceanus was named after being born on the Mayflower while it was sailing across the Alantic Ocean. He was the only child born on the Mayflower. Oceanus didn't live a very long life because he died when he was seven years old.

The Pilgrams wanted to land in Jamestown but landed in Cape Cod instead. Then they traveled across Massachusetts Bay to a rocky harbor called Plymoth. There was a humungous rock that they named Plymoth Rock.

The Puritans left England in search of religious freedom. They wanted to reform or change the Church of England. The Puritans had a rough ride on their way to North America.

The Mayflower Compact was a way to keep order and develop laws. It showed loyalty to their king and it was the very first written constitution. All of the men on board had signed the Compact. This mean't they had to listen and follow the rules they signed to.

The Pilgrams celebrated Thanksgiving as part of their religion. Thanksgiving was a term they used for prayer and fasting. A guy named Squanto tought them how to hunt local animals, gather shellfish,extract sap from Maple trees, and grow crops like beans, corn, and squash. They had so much food they invited Squanto, Cheif Massasoit, and 90 Wampanoags.

William Penn founded Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was named from William Penn's last name and what he had first called it sylvania which meant "woods". He had guaranteed free and fair trial by jury, freedom from unjust imprisonments, as well as freedom of religion and elections. This had brought a wide variety of nation and people to his land.
