  • Germany was the first to colonize Rwanda

    The Germans were the first to colonize Rwanda in 1894. THey looked at Rwandan people and thought the tutsis had more european characteristics, such as lighter skin and a taller build. Thus they put Tutsis on roles of responsibility. They started the colonization of Rwanda.
  • The Belgians solidified the categorys

    The Belgians solidified the categories of Tutsi and Hutu by mandating that every person was to have an identity card that labeled them either Tutsi, Hutu, or Twa. They categorized the people which could lead to war and arguments.
  • Agreement gives Tutis Power

    Habyarimana signed the Arusha Accords, which weakened the Hutu's hold on Rwanda and allowed Tutsis to participate in the Government. This upset the Hutu Extremists. this could of lead to it because they are takin power from one group and handing it over to the other group.
  • Rwandan President Killed

    The genocide was sparked by the death of Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana a Hutu when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport. Killing the president can start an all out war.
