    Adam Smith was professer at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. In his book The Wealth of Nations he talked about the idea of a free economy and free trade. His idea was that if the government did not interfere with trade then the economy would prosper. This idea lead to the developement of capitalism.
  • Jeremy Bentham

    Jeremy Bentham
    Jeremy Bentham came up with the idea of Utilitarianism. He believed that the government should do whats good for for the majority of society. He also believd that the individual had the right to pursue ones goals without interference from the government.

    William Cockerill
    William Cockerill was a carpenter from Britain who moved to Belgium in 1799. When he moved to Belgium he took with him secret plans on how to build spinning machinery. His son, John Cockerill, later took over the industry and expanded the company.

    William Wilberforce lead the force against slavery. He was a member of Parliament who fought for the rights and the freedom of the slaves.

    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1794. His invention mutliplied the production of cotton and the amount of cotton that amount be cleaned. He also created interchangeable parts for the musket and turned it into manufacturing system.

He believed that one day the proletaraits would rise up agianst the bourgeoisie and take over the factories to produce what only society needed.

    In 1833 Parliament passed a law making it illegal for hire children under the age of 9 years old in factories. Also children between the ages of 9-12 could only work for no more than 8 hours a day and people between 13-17 could only work for no more than 12 hours.

Jeremy Bentham was the founder of Utilitarianism and John Stuart Mill led the utilitarian movements and believed that workers should not be deprived of basic needs and starve.
