Reading History

  • The Raven

    The Raven

I can't remember what school grade it was when I first heard The Raven by Gerald McDermott but I remember clearly how much I loved it. Even today I will still list it as my favorite picture book.
  • Stephen King

    Stephen King

I was an avid reader as a child and often read books beyond my reading level. In Elementary school we would do a challenge called 'read across America' and I would read Stephen King books so that I could zip across the map... earning treasure with each lap.
  • Peter and The Starcatchers

    Peter and The Starcatchers

I didn't read as much for joy in Highschool. Opting instead to write my own stories. But one series I read during that time was the Starcatcher series by Dave Barry. Something about Peter Pan's adventures always hit home for me and I loved to lose myself in them.
  • Dragon Age: The Calling

    Dragon Age: The Calling

Most of my reading around graduation was based around games, if I read at all. At the time, Dragon Age had come out and similar to Peter Pan, I could lose myself in the RPG style game play. This was the last book I would read for a while.
  • The Killjoys

    The Killjoys

I didn't read for joy for years after highschool. College took up all of my time that wasn't spent playing video games and I just didn't view it as important. My sociology professor got me back into reading by constantly encouraging us to read. I found I could no longer comprehend the level of books I was reading as a child. Yet he continued to encourage me, and mentioned that perhaps starting at a comic level would help me to relearn comprehension. He was right.
  • Drizzt the Drow

    Drizzt the Drow

Fantasy based books were were it was and I would often read long winded Dungeons and Dragon based books around this time. My coworkers were all about D&D and got me to join their game. It was a mix of what I enjoyed, reading and writing.
  • Dungeons and Dragons

    Dungeons and Dragons

Most of my reading from here on was based around Dungeons and Dragons, whether they were novels or game books. I started hosting my own Campaign (which has been going on for 3 years now). My motivation for reading was extrinsic, and focused on making sure I knew the lore and information so that my players were having a good time.
  • The Stars and The Blackness Between them

The Stars and The Blackness Between them

This and the next book both come from my Literature class at NSC this year. I hadn't read just for pleasure in some time and I found this book absolutely nutritional to my brain. I listened to it on Audiobook, and reading could often still be stressful for me, and was blown away by the voice actors and the emotion that could be felt by listening to a book.
  • Weedflower

    Weedflower

Similar to the last, I was reading these books for a class, yet it didn't feel like work. I was receiving information on racial matters that I as a white person had never thought about or considered. It was eye opening and thoroughly enjoyable. I wanted to read again. (via audiobooks for sure though)
  • My books

    My books

Just one of my bookshelves is pictured here. The subjects vary from instructional to fantasy, comics, real life, to everything in between. Reading used to be something I loved as a child, something I would happily spend all day doing. That is no longer the case, and the act of actually reading and comprehending is a difficult feat for me. Yet I find that with audiobooks I am more likely than before to pick up a new books and spend time enjoying it
