10 Events leading to World War II

  • Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis

    In face of apparent wakness of Britain, France, and teh SU, Germany, Italy, and Japan formed the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis, which were the Axis powers. The three agreed to not interfere with one anothers plans for terriotial expansion. This effected WWII because the agreement cleared the way for these anti-democratic, aggressor powers to take even bloder steps.

    Manchuria was seized and when the league of nations condemed the aggresion japan was drew from the organization but the league of nations didnt stop japan from doing what they did so it shows how all the countries did what they wanted during World War II and didnt care how it effected other countries.

    Mussolini acted on imperialist ambitions. Ethiopians outdated weapons were no matches for Mussolinis tanks, machine guns, etc. This connected to World War II because Mussolinis aggression disrupted the balance of power.

    Hitler Goes Against the Treaty of Versailles
    Hitler built up the German Military in defiance of the treaty that ended World war I. The germans hated the Versailles treaty, and Hitlers successfully challenge made him even more popular than he already was. In 1936, he sent troops into the demilitarized Rhineland bordering france, which was another treaty violation. By HItler being able to so easily break the treaty it made him more popular and this just showed during World War II how easy it was for his power to grow and spread.

    By 1938, Hitler engineered Anschluss, the union of Austria and Germany. Hitler sent his army to “preserve order” and Hitler indicated his new role as ruler in austria when he made a speech from the Hofburg Palace. This connects to World War II because hitler would quickly silence any Austrians who oppossed his ideas, and since the western democracies took no action. This upset the balance of power because he could so easily gain power and it became too much.

    Hitler made three million Germans in Sudetenland be given autonomy. Czechoslovakia was one of the only two remaining democracies in Eastern Europe. Hitler increased demands, and said that the Sudetenland must be annexed to Germany. SInce Hitler was so easy to annex it, he gained power and more land so easily. Again another example of effecting World War II because the balance of power with Hitler was altered and he kept gaining more power becoming a powerhouse in Germany.

    Europe plunged rapidly towards awr. In Mrach 1939, Hitler broke his promises and gobbled up the rest of czechoslovakia. This effected World War II because it showed how easily Hitler could gain power, and lead to more of his expansion.

    Hitler announced a nonaggression pact with Stalin. Hitler feared communism and stalin feared fascism. So this effected World War II because by joining with Hitler, Stalin tried to protect the Soviet Union from the threat of war with germany and got a chance to gain land from western europe.

    German forces invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany. This invasion is what sparked World War II, with the devastation of World War I and the awareness of the destructive power of technology, this made the idea of more fighting even more unbearable.
