  • Treaty of Hidalgo

    Treaty of Hidalgo
    President Polk made an agreement with Nicholas Trist setting that Mexico will give up claim to Texas they will give New Mexico and California, the U.S will pay Mexico $15,000,000, and in addition will pay for all destruction. The treaty was signed in Feb. 2, 1848. As new land was added the question reopened whether or not the new states should allow slavery or not.

    The compromise of 1850 was made by the "great compromiser", Henry Clay. The cause for this was for each to reach an agreement that will benefit both sides. Consequently this resulted to the Civil War because there was still conflicts by wanting to have one option over all.
  • Fugitive Slave State

    The first law was made in 1793 by Congress that allowed slaves to be returned to their owners. In a second attempt, in 1850, the law was fixed to serve harsh punishments when slaves resisted arrest. This dispute between the North and the South resulted in conflict of one favoring and the other ending the idea of slavery.

    A novel about abolishing slavery caused everyone to go mad. In 1852 Uncle Tom's Cabin was released selling millions of copies influencing everyone that slavery is a huge problem. There hasn't been anyone during those times who expressed their ideas in that matter causing controversy over how to properly treat a slave. This caused the Civil War.

    On May 30, 1854 Kansas and Nebraska were debating to be a free or slave state. Therefore the act fell in the hands of the people which ended badly causing Bleeding Kansas. This led to the Civil War.

    In 1854 Kansas was facing drastic controversy choosing between being a free or slave state. Southerners from Missouri traveled to Kansas to boost up the votes in hopes to win. Having more votes in favor of the other caused a fight to brake out and 55 settlers died. This was the breaking point that led to the Civil War.

    James Buchanan is considered to be the worst president of American history. Buchanan won the election of 1856 but it wasn't long for his time of glory come to an end. Buchanan ideas over slavery wasn't the proper approach, he found the concept to be a issue with no importance. For those reasons many states succeed and Buchanan did little to stop these crises within the union leading to the Civil War.

    The owner of Dred Scott passed away and the widow intended to keep him as her slave. Of course Scott thought he should be free the final decision had to be made by the Supreme Court on March 6, 1857. The court ruled that he was still a slave and was considered to be property. The result angered the North. This caused the Civil War.

    Abolitionist John Brown led a rebellion to capture the fort in Harper Ferry. Consequently the rebellion ended in bad terms. On December 2, 1859 he was hanged to death. This rebellion was well known because they demonstrated a point which was the uprising of slaves. This caused the Civil War.
